The City of Angels, as it's commonly called, has been a magnet for fortune-seekers from all over the world for over a century, making it one of America's most multi-cultural cities. It's near perfect climate and a live and let live atmosphere where everyone is accepted has also helped. In 2008 its population was listed as nearly four million Angelenos, as the locals are called, making it the largest city in the western United States. The area was first settled in the late 1700s and the city was incorporated in 1850.
It's name means "The Angels" in Spanish. Having been first a Spanish colony and then a Mexican territory, a strong Hispanic influence has continued throughout the city's history. During the 1800s thousands of Chinese workers were brought it to help build the Transcontinental Railroad. Their descendants and other oriental immigrants comprise the second largest ethnic group, evidenced by the neighborhoods of Chinatown, Korea town, and Little Tokyo.
The homes of the rich and famous are found in Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills and Bel Air. Other well known areas are the San Fernando valley, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. The Los Angeles city hall was the tallest building since opening in 1928 until the 1960s when height restrictions were eliminated. During the 1980s a high-rise building boom began and continued into the 1990s. Other famous landmarks are the Hollywood Bowl, Watts Tower, Dodger Stadium, the Kodak Theater, Hollywood Boulevard, and Grauman's Chinese Theater.
